Shelter-in-place order in Layton is lifted after reports of gunshots

LAYTON — Police told residents in a Layton neighborhood to shelter in place on Thursday after reports of gunshots. By 5:30 p.m., police had lifted the shelter order.

The request came after multiple calls to police from residents reporting they’d heard shots fired in the area of Oak Lane.

When officers arrived, they said they heard gunfire that was followed by a possible verbal threat.

The Layton Police Department said residents on Oak Lane north of Kays Creek and south of Oak Forest Drive should stay inside while officers search yard to yard.

East Layton Elementary and Little Tiger Academy in Layton were on secure protocol as of 3 p.m. Adams Elementary was briefly on secure protocol, but it was lifted quickly, Chris Williams with the Davis County School District said.

“Please put all animals inside. Stay inside and call Layton PD if you see anything suspicious,” police said.

By 2:22 p.m., Layton police said the area in question “was contained and tactical teams are searching.”

Layton PD said multiple residents reported gunshots and said some houses may have been hit.

Police, along with SWAT, were still searching for a suspect after 3 p.m., Lt. Riley Richins with Layton PD said. He said officers were using drones to sweep the area, including yards and wooded areas around the neighborhood.

Richins said police hadn’t found any shell casings, but police and residents described hearing “rapid gunfire” of at least 10 shots.
