Noriega: Stocks crashing, professionals say, ‘When in doubt, zoom out’

SALT LAKE CITY — Like Dorothy trying to get back home to Kansas, I’m going to repeat this phrase over and over and over.
Instead of “There’s no place like home,” my financial mantra has become, “When in doubt, zoom out.”
Shane Stewart, a certified financial planner with DMBA, joined us on the Dave & Dujanovic show to be our financial therapist as we watched the last three days of the market erase a year’s worth of gains in the Dow Jones Industrial.
“This day is actually indicative of what we’re going to see for a while, the ups and downs and the uncertainty,” said Stewart. “We’ve seen this before, as recently as 2020, when the pandemic hit, we went from 28,000 to 21,000.” Ultimately bottoming out at 19,028 on March 23, 2020.
Repeat after me, “When in doubt, zoom out.”
“If you zoom out the past three years, five years or even 10 years,” said Stewart, “you’ll see that you’ve made progress and you’ll continue to march forward.”

Three years ago, on April 8, 2022, the Dow was 34,721.
Zoom out.
Today, the Dow is 37,965, up 9.34%
Five years ago, on April 8, 2020, the Dow was 23,537.
Zoom out.
Today, it’s up 60% from 2020.
Ten years ago, on April 7, 2015, the Dow was 17,884.
Zoom out.
Dow is up 113% from 2015.
“(People) never called me when the markets were up, I wonder why,” said Stewart. “We’re wired to react to losses, and we don’t pay as much attention to gains.”
As hard as it is to watch my 401k get punched in the nose, and I start questioning everything and my instinct is to run … I will repeat after Shane, “When in doubt, zoom out.”
