BYU professors help in national cancer study

PROVO — A cancer study involving two BYU professors may lead to new therapy treatments and understanding how different cancer cells function and dysfunction.
Professors Sam Payne and Matthew Bailey have worked with the National Cancer Institute over the past decade to analyze more than 1,000 tumors across 10 different types of cancer.
Payne says understanding how the cancer cells function will allow experts to better diagnose and treat the disease.
He added their biggest discovery is that each variety of cancer reacts with the body’s cells differently, unlike common infections like the flu, meaning different cancers require different therapies rather than having only one generic solution.
He said a highlight of the study was working with his own students.
