SALT LAKE CITY — A new survey from Pew Research Center shows a sharp increase in teen social media use. The percentage of teens that are constantly on social media has gone up by 72% in the last decade.
According to the survey, almost all teens have a smartphone, and the majority own gaming consoles. The survey also showed that YouTube is the most popular platform, followed by TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Older platforms like Facebook and X have seen a sharp decline in teen use.
Glen Anderson is the founder of Rewild the Child, a Utah nonprofit that helps teens get off of social media.
Anderson said that more teens are trying to limit their phones because they are aware of the problems and negative effects that come with high screen time. He also said there is no blanket method when it comes to helping teens get off of their phones.
“Everybody’s kind of different. Some kids need to be off of it completely; some kids just need to be like conscious, like ‘hey, there’s a problem.'”
Anderson said as technology continues to grow, so will the need for resources to help teenagers who are engulfed in the digital world.
