SALT LAKE CITY — Here’s the problem– more people are shopping on the internet or using services like Uber, which mean sales tax revenues are taking a big hit. Sales taxes are a big source for government and school funding.

Lawmakers told a gathering of about 100-people at the Capitol Thursday, they need new ideas for an unpopular bill. The proposed bill would have taxed most services, including haircuts.  The Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force plan to hold eight town hall meetings to get public input for ideas.

Senator Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, the tax force’s Senate co-chairman says,

“This is not just our problem. It’s everybody’s problem.”

HB 441 was abandoned during the last legislative session when there was a public outcry about the possibility of taxing services and raising the food tax.

To hear more about what the Tax Restructuring group needs for tax reform, go to Money Making Sense podcast hosted by Heather Kelly as she speaks to Task Force member, Senator Curt Bramble, R-District 16.
