PROVO — BYU football will have one more game in 2025.
The Cougars are going to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl to close out the 2025 season. No. 12 BYU will face No. 22 Georgia Tech from the ACC.
BYU Football vs. Georgia Tech
It’s the first meeting between the two programs since 2013. BYU leads the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets, 3-1.
The Pop-Tarts Bowl will be played on Saturday, December 27, at 1:30 p.m. (MST) on ABC.
There were reports that BYU was going to play FBS Independent Notre Dame in the Pop-Tarts Bowl after the Irish were not selected for the Playoff. Instead of playing against BYU, Notre Dame opted out of the postseason altogether.
So, instead, it’s BYU-Georgia Tech, a Top 25 matchup in a bowl game that features edible mascots.
Season snapshots for BYU and Georgia Tech
BYU finished the season with an 11-2 record. Their two losses were against the No. 4-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech defeated BYU in Lubbock in the regular season, then again yesterday in the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington.
That loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship Game moved BYU farther from the playoff bracket. Now, they will look to close out their 2025 season with a chance at 12 wins for the first time since 2001.
BYU will be playing in its 42nd bowl game all-time. Under Sitake, BYU is going to a bowl game for the eighth time. They are 5-2 in bowl games since Sitake became the head coach in 2016.
Georgia Tech enters the matchup with a 9-3 overall record. The Yellow Jackets climbed to as high as No. 7 in the AP Top 25 poll this season. They started the year 8-0 before losing three of their final four regular-season games.
It’s a matchup between two programs that recently signed their head coaches to new contract extensions. Georgia Tech’s Brent Key signed an extension that locks him in at his alma mater through the 2030 season.
The same goes for Sitake, who landed a “long-term” extension from BYU, his alma mater, after entertaining strong interest from the Penn State Nittany Lions.
