Local ski swap looks to help people combat financial barriers to winter sports

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s ski season is right around the corner, and a local ski swap is hoping to get people the equipment they want at lower prices.
Rocky Mountain Ski Swaps is hosting an event at the Utah State Fairpark on Friday and Saturday, where people can both sell their unwanted ski equipment and buy equipment below retail prices.
“There’s always going to be folks that are going to go into a ski shop and be able to write huge checks, but that’s not the majority of the population,” said Dale Roberts, founder of Rocky Mountain Ski Swaps. “There’s a lot of people out there that want to ski…[or] ski with their families, but they need this venue to be able to afford it.”
Roberts told KSL NewsRadio they will have staff members on hand to help people know what a fair price would be for their unwanted skis or other equipment. If that equipment sells over the weekend, the seller gets 75% of the listed price, then the ski swap keeps the other 25% for the venue, staff and other costs.

So, if someone wants to sell a pair of skis for $100 and it sells either Friday or Saturday, the seller will earn $75.
“They (sellers) get 75% of their money back, and they don’t have to go through the time of listing it (on another secondhand marketplace),” Roberts said.
Roberts also said there will be some brand-new equipment sold that is not impacted by any tariffs. And, people who spend $275 or more at the event will receive a free day pass to Sundance Mountain Resort.

People looking to sell their unwanted skiing or snowboarding equipment should bring it to the Promontory Building at the Utah State Fairpark between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday.
Those looking to purchase items can do so between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday as well as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
There is a $7 door charge for people coming through Friday evening, but no door charge on Saturday. And parking for the event is free, according to the event’s Facebook page.
There will also be other ski swaps in Utah in the coming weeks, including Cache Valley on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, Ogden on Nov. 7 and 8, as well as Thanksgiving Point on Nov. 21 and 22.
