Nine game suspension for BYU basketball star Yoeli Childs

PROVO — BYU Basketball star Yoeli Childs will sit out the first nine games of the 2019-20 season.

This suspension comes due to Childs declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft and signing with an agent following the 2018-19 season, according to KSLSports.com.

Following the 2018-19 season, the NCAA allows student-athletes who have remaining eligibility to sign with an agent and still keep their remaining eligibility while exploring other options.

However, Childs’ signing with an agent was determined impermissible by the NCAA because he didn’t file the required paperwork with the NCAA before he signed with an agent.

Addressing the media on Friday, Childs said, “My intent wasn’t to do anything wrong.”

The non-conference schedule for the Cougars has not been released yet, but listed among the games he may miss are the Maui Invitational, Kansas State and Michigan State.

Childs will also miss a road trip to Houston on November 14th, a home game against Cal State Fullerton, San Diego State on November 9th and a game against Southern Utah at the beginning of the season.

Last season Childs averaged 21.2 points and 9.7 rebounds, making him a strong force on the team. This may present a significant setback for the 2019-20 BYU Basketball season.
