Two Team USA locals fall just short of speed skating 1000m podium

MILAN, Italy — Salt Lake City residents Erin Jackson and Brittany Bowe led Team USA into the Speed Skating Women’s 1000m event on Monday, and both finished with top times just outside of the top three.

Bowe came in fourth, six-tenths of a second slower than the bronze time, and Jackson came in sixth.

Both Bowe and Jackson had medal hopes after claiming hardware at the 2022 games in Beijing.

Bowe won the bronze medal in the 1000m, and Jackson won gold in the 500m.

Set to hit the ice in the second half of the field, Netherlands skater Suzanne Schulting had the time to beat at 1:15.46.

Jackson’s turn came first in the 11th pairing.

After posting a 1:15-flat, she sat atop the ranks, but her time in the top spot was short-lived.

Two pairings later, Femke Kok of the Netherlands and Team USA’s Bowe both beat her time, pushing her down to third. Then, Canada’s Beatrice Lamarche edged her out by just over two-tenths of a second, knocking her off the podium.

Bowe still had a chance to make it two straight Olympics with a medal in the 1000m, but the final pairing had something to say about that. Netherlands’ Jutta Leerdam and Japan’s Miho Takagi finished first and third, with Leerdam setting a new Olympic record.
