SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation is warning drivers to find alternate routes as a closure of US-89 in the Weber-Davis county area will start this weekend.
Beginning Friday, May 3 at 8 p.m., the closure will start on US 89 at state Route 193 so the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District can install a new water pipeline.
“The nature of the job that they’re doing, it requires this closure to happen,” said UDOT spokesperson Mitch Shaw. “We know people are going to be inconvenienced, they’re not going to be happy, but it’s just something that has to be done.”
Shaw told KSL NewsRadio they expect the closure to impact drivers the most on Saturday afternoon. The road will reopen on Monday, May 6 at 1 p.m.
“Drivers should expect significant delays throughout the duration of the work,” UDOT stated in a release. “On Saturday afternoon, drivers could encounter delays of up to an hour on both US-89 and I-15 and are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes.”
The department said drivers could run into potentially one-hour delays on U.S. 89 and I-15 during that time.
“If you don’t have to drive this weekend in this area, then don’t do it,” Shaw said.
Planned construction is weather-dependent and subject to change. You can get the very latest information on the US 89 closure by checking with the UDOT Traffic website.
