SALT LAKE CITY — If you’ve noticed a lack of Utah Department of Transportation construction projects on highways through Sugar House and Millcreek, you’re not imagining it.
In 2021, UDOT began projects that included adding another lane to I-80 between 1300 East and 23oo East and repaving I-215 between 3300 South and 4500 South.
All that’s missing is a few electronic signs and a guardrail.
Those finishing touches to the projects, said UDOT spokesman John Gleason, were put on hold so that the department could focus on completing the West Davis Highway.
“It has been a huge focus to get this project going and to get it completed,” Gleason said.
The West Davis Highway opens this weekend. Gleason said UDOT should finish the last few items on the I-80 and I-215 projects within a few months. At most, he said, drivers might see an occasional overnight lane closure.
The reason for driver inconvenience that stretched past the two-year mark?
“All of these projects really have the goal in mind of planning for the future, and making sure that we’re making wise decisions,” he said. “Not only for our generation but for the generations that are going to follow.”
UDOT completed more than 130 projects around the state in 2023. Combined, the cost came in at about $1 billion.
