14-year-old boy dies after West Valley shooting

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The West Valley City Police Department confirmed the death of a 14-year-old boy Sunday evening. Police said the initial investigation indicated that the boy died from an accidental shooting.
In a tweet on Sunday, the WVCPD said the hospital that the boy was taken to after the shooting had reported him as having passed away that afternoon.
The WVCPD said it would conduct a full investigation into the boy’s death. The investigation will also “aim to determine how the boy was in possession of a gun,” according to WVCPD.
Police were alerted to shots fired around 10 p.m. Saturday at 3100 South 4800 West in West Valley City.
Officers found a child in critical condition when they arrived on the scene.
WVCPD Lieutenant Steve Beardshall said that it seemed to be an “accidental incident.”
The WVCPD also said evidence found at the scene pointed to the “accidental nature of the shooting.”
