SALT LAKE CITY — Brian Head Resort officials want to triple the size of the resort and expand to more than 2,500 acres.
Right now the resort fills 887 acres. The project would add 1,651 acres to the resort located 30 miles east of Cedar City.
Brian Head Resort General Manager Tom Pettigrew said the resort is often visited by people from around the state and country, and not just those from southern Utah. According to Pettigrew, the extra space will allow them to welcome more people while maintaining the same high-quality service.
“We’ll be able to accommodate more people on any given day and still maintain the wonderful high-elevation southern Utah experience that we have currently,” Pettigrew said.
Here’s what the Brian Head expansion would include
The expansion proposal includes 14 new ski lifts, up to 10 miles of new roads, four new on-mountain restaurants and eight new ski patrol areas.
The U.S. Forest Service has begun its assessment of the proposal, which includes an environmental impact review.
If approved, the proposal would also grant the resort permission to clear dead trees left from the Brian Head fire in 2017.
Brian Head officials also want to hear from the public and have planned three open houses to review the proposal.
Beginning Tuesday, the public has 45 days to comment.
