25 injured due to severe turbulence on flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam

SALT LAKE CITY — Twenty-five people aboard a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam were injured due to severe turbulence, forcing the plane to divert to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport Wednesday evening.
According to a news release from Delta Air Lines, Flight DL56 was an Airbus A330-900. A Delta spokesperson said it carried 275 customers and 13 crew members.
A Utah eye doctor who was on the flight spoke to KSL TV about the ordeal. Dr. Joseph Carbone and his wife were headed to Amsterdam and then Kenya to give away eyeglasses. Carbone said that about 90 minutes into the flight, the plane dropped.
“The turbulence hit in three waves, if you will,” Carbone said. “And each one progressively got worse.”
He said a flight attendant near him flew up in the air, and people grabbed her so she would not hit the ceiling.
The plane landed safely shortly before 7 p.m. Mountain Time, and medical personnel checked the condition of the passengers and crew. Twenty-five people, including seven crew members, were transported to local hospitals.
“Safety is our No. 1 value at Delta, and our Delta Care Team is working directly with customers to support their immediate needs,” Delta’s statement read.
On Thursday afternoon, Delta said all the passengers who were hospitalized have now been treated and released.
Delta says it will now operate a special flight from Minneapolis to Amsterdam tonight so customers can resume their journey.
