Prosecutors will not reopen Deserae Turner’s attempted murder case after her death

SALT LAKE CITY — The Cache County Attorney’s Office said Friday it will not reopen an attempted murder case after the victim, Deserae Turner-Buck, died Thursday.
Tuner’s death came eight years after she was shot in the head and left in a secluded area in Cache County. After recovering from her initial wounds, she suffered through continual health problems, and ultimately died of septic pulmonary emboli.
According to the release, the attorney’s office will not attempt to reopen the shooters’ cases, saying the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution prevents it.
Despite this, the office said it “will vigorously oppose any future parole for the convicted individuals, engaging with the Parole Board to ensure they are fully aware of the profound pain and suffering of Deserae, her husband, and her family.”
The men convicted in Turner’s shooting case are up for parole in 2032 at the earliest, according to the release.
“Deserae will be truly missed, and we have been privileged to come to know and associate with her,” the release said.
