Stage 1 fire restrictions in effect for Dixie National Forest

SALT LAKE CITY — Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect in the Dixie National Forest, limiting activities involving fire.
An email from the United States Forest Service said restrictions are meant to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfire.
Under the restrictions, building fires, even those fueled by charcoal or briquettes, is prohibited, unless it’s in a fire pit or grate installed by the Forest Service.
Cooking devices fueled by liquid petroleum are still allowed, but only in developed recreation sites. Examples include campgrounds and picnic spaces.
Additionally, smoking is restricted under the current Dixie National Forest restrictions. Those who choose to light a cigarette must be in an “enclosed vehicle or building” or within the boundaries of a developed recreation area.
Areas that are at least three feet wide and have been cleared of anything that can catch fire are also acceptable, according to an email from the Forest Service.
This fire restriction is set to expire on Dec. 31; however, it could be rescinded before then.
Violating Dixie National Forest fire restrictions could result in fines or jail
According to the Forest Service, violating fire restrictions can result in Class B misdemeanor charges. Individual offenders may be required to pay a fine of up to $5,000. Organizations could be hit with a fine of up to $10,000. Alternatively, jail time of up to six months could be ordered.
Similar to Dixie National Forest, several Utah state parks are under Stage 1 fire restrictions.
