SALT LAKE CITY — About 30 people were stuck on Snowbird’s red tram for about an hour and a half on Thursday afternoon.

Ten more people were stuck on the blue tram.

Snowbird Resort confirmed that the trams stopped because the emergency brake system was tripped. That happened at about 4:20 p.m., and a resort official said the problem was resolved by 6 p.m.

There were no injuries.

Where the Snowbird trams stopped

The Snowbird trams travel 1.6 miles up 2,900 vertical feet as they transport passengers to the top of Hidden Peak.

When they stopped on Thursday, the red tram was above Daltons Draw, a valley in the summer and a double-black diamond ski run in the winter.

“The blue cabin was above the Cirque Traverse,” said Kelsey James, assistant director of marketing at Snowbird. The Cirque Traverse is a ridge on the eastern edge of the Gad Valley.

The blue and red trams at Snowbird are relatively new, opening to the public in November 2022. This is the first time something like this has happened.

“This has not occurred with our new Tram cabins,” said Kelsey James, assistant director of marketing at Snowbird.

“The only other time that our teams can recall this happening was in the 90s due to ice on the Tram line,” James said.

KSL has a reporter on the scene, and will provide more information when it is available.
