Extra security expected for General Conference weekend

SALT LAKE CITY — You may see more law enforcement on the streets of Salt Lake City because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ General Conference this weekend.
More officers will be on foot and on motorcycles this weekend, to make sure the 100-thousand-plus people who are here for General Conference feel safe.

Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Lovell says recent events in the country, like the attack on a church meetinghouse in Michigan, haven’t necessarily led them to increase security, because they always come out in force for conference weekend. They conduct a threat assessment every conference, and are operating based on that.
“We have a security analyst group that will analyze threats and vulnerabilities for the event each time it occurs.”
The extra security for this year is more about the 100-thousand-plus people expected to attend this weekend.
“The Salt Lake City Police Department has significantly increased security during this event just due to the number of people that are coming and going,” said Lovell.
Lovell also said they work closely with the church, which protects the inside, as police protect the outside of the conference center.
He added that everyone can play a role in helping them keep people safe though by reporting anything suspicious.
