Family displaced after a fire in their St. George home

SAINT GEORGE, Utah — A home caught fire near Pine View Highschool in St. George just after 5:00 P.M., displacing the occupants. Emergency fire crews responded to the structure fire after a passerby saw smoke from the garage of a center unit of a triplex apartment complex.
A 12-year-old male was the only one in the house who noticed the smoke and could evacuate the home safely.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the garage, front door, and attic. Fire Crews ensured the safe evacuation of the sole occupant,
“It appears to be accidental,” said Fire Chief Robert Stoker with St George Fire, “We’re just starting our investigation here in a minute to go in and see what we’ve got.”
Chief Stoker Said that the fire stayed in the single unit thanks to firewalls in the attic.
The occupants of the neighboring units evacuated as a precaution. Later, crews gave them the go-ahead to return to their homes. The fire damage and smoke damage throughout their home will temporarily displace the affected family.
To that, Chief Stoker said, “We’ll check and see if they’ve got a place to stay. If not, we’ll get hold of the Red Cross.”
Emergency services, including St. George Fire, St. George Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Dominion Gas, responded.
The investigation into what specifically caused the fire has started as crews remain on the scene. Nearby road closures may cause delays as on-scene work concludes.
