Firework sales have a slow start but vendors stay optimistic

SALT LAKE CITY — Firework sales are off to a sluggish start this year, with vendors seeing smaller crowds ahead of the Fourth of July.
“It’s me and my family out here,” said Darren Davis who has a fireworks stand in Kearns. “We’re always kind of sweating it out here on the July.”

He says so far this year, his sales have been kind of flat.
“So I think one key thing, I think a lot of people are just getting together for like a barbecue or getting together as a family to celebrate the fourth.”
Additionally, Davis said he thinks sales may be affected by the holiday landing on a Friday.
“They’re going on vacation … are going to do a little weekend … they’ll usually come back around,” he said noting the upcoming Pioneer Day.
In West Jordan, Madisen Gailey said sales slow mid-week but her weekend sales are doing well.
“Obviously during the week it’s going to be slow,” Gailey said. “I think Saturday we beat last year’s Saturday. (So)Saturday was up yes for this county.”
Multiple people stopped to do small purchases over the weekend and returned to buy more, she said.
Gailey said her parents also have a stand by Saratoga and sales had dropped a bit.
Neither Davis nor Gailey believe that the hot temperatures, dry conditions or restrictions are affecting their sales.
“We’ve had drier summers and sold pretty much most of our fireworks before,” Gailey said.
Both seemed confident that they will sell most of their fireworks before the end of the month.
