Former detective with SLC police sentenced for role in the riot at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON — A former detective with the Salt Lake City Police Department was sentenced Monday for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Michael Hardin was sentenced to 30 days of home confinement and 18 months of probation. Additionally, Hardin was also ordered to $500 in restitution and perform 60 hours of community service.
He had pled guilty to a misdemeanor earlier this year.
Hardin was not accused of any violence or damage to property. However, prosecutors were seeking 45 days in jail for him.
Prosecutors claimed with Hardin’s experience in law enforcement, he should have known how dangerous a mob could be.
Hardin’s attorney claimed that his client’s connection to the riots not only created problems with his family, but it damaged his employment in the finance industry, a career he started following his retirement from law enforcement.
