PARK CITY — Guardsman Pass is open for summer 2025.
The Utah Department of Transportation made the announcement on social media the morning of May 20 with a video. On-screen text described opening the road as “a moment that felt like Hozier’s yell.”
The road is a favorite among Utah outdoor enthusiasts.

The text references a yell included in singer-songwriter Noah Kahan’s song Northern Attitude, which he collaborated on with Irish singer-songwriter Hozier. It comes at a climactic moment in the song.
A TikTok trend later sprouted from the musical moment.
Due to weather conditions, Guardsman Pass’ opening was delayed on May 17. Originally, it was slated to open May 19.
Current Guardsman Pass conditions
Although the road has opened, UDOT said there is still snow in the area. Plan your adventures wisely before heading out and wear warm clothing.
UDOT also reminded drivers not to park on the shoulder of the road, as it is narrow. Only park in designated areas and always obey posted signage, including speed limits.
Big Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed, so dogs are not allowed on that side. However, they are allowed on the Park City side, which is east of the summit and includes the majority of the pass’ hiking and mountain biking trails.
Check trail-specific regulations before bringing your four-legged friends into the area.
UDOT has recently opened other passes, too. Per its seasonal roads website, the following are welcoming traffic for summer 2025:
- Monte Cristo Highway
- East Canyon
- Wolf Creek Summit Road
- Cedar Breaks National Monument
Mirror Lake Highway, American Fork Alpine Loop, and Mount Holly Road remain closed.
