Warmer weather has many Utahns ready for gardening

LAYTON — No one can truly predict the future, but Maddie Randall just knew Saturday was going to be busy.

“Today, we have pretty much been non-stop,” she said. “There are a couple of moments like this where it is slow, but it has been pretty steady.”

Of course, when you work at a nursery like J&J Nursery and Garden Center in Layton, and the temperature is going up, she expected it.

“People are excited to get out in the garden, get their ground ready, and get things planted and prepare their lawns and everything. They are just ready to get outside,” Randall said.

From plants, flowers and vegetables to garden tools, fertilizer and compost, hundreds, if not thousands, of people showed up to J&J all day Saturday.

Workers like Doug Hume, who has been at J&J for 20 years, said it is not too early to get preparing and planting.

“Well, it depends. If you are planting dahlias, yeah, those are too early. But if you are prepping your garden, it is not too early,” he said. “And then for your lawn, it is not too early to get your pre-emergent down.”

Hume spent the day answering plenty of questions about what should and shouldn’t be planted this weekend.

He said he can’t blame people for wanting to do something with their lawns and gardens.

“You are cooped up in your house all the time. All winter long. And then the sun pops, you either go for a walk or go work in your garden,” Hume said.

As the temperature continues to get even warmer as spring gets closer, Randall is confident in predicting it will only get busier.

“Yeah, definitely,” she said with a laugh. “People are ready for warmer weather.”
