Labor Day travelers can expect busy RV parks and campgrounds

SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns looking to get out of town and into the mountains over the Labor Day holiday weekend might want to check ahead before hitting the road.
Shaping up to be a typical Labor Day weekend
“We are pretty packed. Looks like it’s going to be a good one,” said Chrisette Thompson at Ruby’s Inn RV park and campground.
Thompson said the area around Bryce Canyon is already busy. She expects it to pick up even more.
“When I came up to work today, there was quite a lot of people on the road,” said Thompson. “Usually, September is pretty busy.”
She said Ruby’s does have some overflow camping available but those spots are first-come-first-served.
Several campgrounds and RV sites around Zion National Park only had a smattering of open spots as of Friday night.

Same story further north
It appears to be just as busy in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. People looking for a quick getaway are already flocking to the areas closer to the Wasatch Front.
“We are seeing campgrounds that are full already due to folks wanting to recreate,” said Ben Kraja with the Salt Lake Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
He pointed out hunting season is in full swing right now. He said that fact paired with the holiday weekend might make it tough to find a spot to pop a tent.
The forest has a mix of designated camping sites which are mostly reservable online. There is also a decent amount of dispersed camping areas that are first-come-first-served.
Both Kraja and Thompson recommend calling ahead or checking recreation.gov to see availability before packing up the family and hitting the road.
