Police seek help in hit-and-run that killed motorcyclist in Salt Lake’s Liberty Wells neighborhood

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police are asking for help in identifying the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run that took the life of a 67-year-old motorcyclist in the Liberty Wells neighborhood.
The incident occurred late Sunday night at approximately 10:45 p.m. at 2100 South and 400 East intersection, near Kearns-Saint Ann School.
Authorities said the driver of a light-colored sedan ran a stop sign on 400 East before colliding with the motorcyclist traveling on 2100 South.
Several 911 calls were made about the crash, and responding officers found the victim critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.
Investigators urge witnesses to come forward
Police are now asking residents and businesses in the area to provide any video footage or eyewitness accounts that could help identify the driver.
Sgt. Miles Southworth with SLCPD stated, “If they have cell phone video, if they have any doorbell cam video, if they have anything that can help us with leads on this investigation, if anybody saw anything that can help us to identify the individual involved, please come forward, we are asking for your help.”
Hit-and-run drivers face legal consequences
Authorities remind drivers that it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident without waiting for first responders.
Southworth also issued a direct plea to the driver involved in this case.
“I’d also ask this individual if they are watching this, please come forward, talk to our detectives, please come clean and identify yourself and we can go forward with this process,” he said.
Ongoing investigation
The department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit has been working to map out the crash scene and gather all possible evidence. Investigators are also working with nearby homes and businesses to secure surveillance footage that may reveal more details.
At this time, the identity of the motorcyclist has not been released as police continue notifying family members.
