Federal investigators searching for suspect in Orem mail theft case

OREM  — Federal investigators are searching for a suspect accused of stealing mail from an Orem post office.

According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, an unknown man stole mail from the back dock of the Mountain Shadows Post Office at 877 E. 1200 South in Orem, on May 29.

The investigation came to KSL’s attention after an Orem resident said her mail carrier told neighbors some deliveries would not arrive that day because of a theft at the facility.

Postal Inspector Brook Robinson confirmed the incident and said investigators have been unable to identify the suspect despite sharing surveillance images with other law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said notification letters were sent to households believed to be affected by the theft. The letters outlined the scope of the incident, provided guidance on monitoring financial accounts and included instructions on reporting suspected identity theft.

Officials have not said how much mail was taken or how many households may have been affected.

The resident who contacted KSL said she was told pieces of priority mail were among the items stolen. However, postal inspectors have not publicly confirmed the specific types of mail that were taken.

The investigation remains active.

Mail theft is a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 upon conviction.

The Postal Inspection Service encourages anyone with information about the suspect or the theft to contact investigators.

Robinson noted that under Project Safe Delivery, a nationwide initiative launched in 2023 to combat mail theft and postal crime, authorities have made more than 3,600 arrests for mail theft and more than 500 arrests related to postal robberies.
