WEST JORDAN, Utah — Flowers, teddy bears, stuffed bunnies and dogs and a Hello Kitty doll line the park strip outside a West Jordan home where an arson fire killed 4 people last week.
Police said they continue to wait for details from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to conclusively determine the identities of the victims, a man and a woman and a boy and girl. But they believe one of the people who died in the home near 8200 South and 6400 West on Friday was responsible for the fire.
Over the weekend, West Jordan Sgt. Andrew Hercules told reporters they’re still working to figure out exactly who started the fire and why.
“Fire investigators determined that an accelerant was used to rapidly spread the fire,” Hercules said.
Police believe all four victims are members of the same family.
West Jordan home tells two stories
Neighbors told KSL TV the fire sounded like an explosion. The evidence on scene appears to bear out that observation; from the front of the home, only minimal damage like plywood over the front door and charring on the side of the garage is visible. But on the back of the home visible from 6400 West, the windows and doors have been blown out and charring can be seen around each, especially on the main level.
Police could not say how long it will take for the medical examiner to complete identification.
