Middle schoolers represent Utah in national donation of quilts

SALT LAKE CITY — Midvale Middle School students are contributing to Homeless Remembrance Blanket Project this year. The project will cover 9,000 square feet of the West Lawn at the U.S. Capitol.

The quilt tops were donated by Vicky McIntosh. After the display, the quilts will be given to those in Washington DC experiencing homelessness or are in dire need of winter resources. 

Overall, the goal of the project is to raise public awareness about people without adequate housing, according to a press release about the project.

According to the press release, some Midvale students tying these quilts have experienced homelessness themselves. So when asked why they are participating in the project, many feel they are paying it forward. 

Further, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, works to remove educational barriers for children as a result of homelessness. Now, the district’s McKinney-Vento liaison, Connie Pierce, is helping with the project. 

“I want to call attention to how many people we have that are unsheltered and need help,” said Pierce in a press release.

Midvale Middle School is helping to represent Utah, as all 50 states are a part of this project. Nearly 500 quilts will hang on the West Lawn. 

The Homeless Memorial Blanket Project is welcoming all to donate. Drop off quilts at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol Street NE in Washington DC. From Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., until Dec. 20.
