MURRAY, Utah  — A Murray family already coping with stage-four breast cancer is facing new heartbreak after police said a drunk driver crashed into their SUV on Tuesday morning during the school drop-off rush.

Police said the crash happened near Van Winkle Expressway and 900 East. They said a speeding driver plowed into four vehicles before running off. The suspect was quickly arrested and booked for DUI and fleeing the scene.

Inside one of those cars was a father and his four-year-old son on their way to a doctor’s appointment. Both escaped with only minor injuries, but the family’s silver SUV was totaled.

The boy’s mother, Molly Jimenez, told KSL NewsRadio her husband and their child were turning onto 900 East when the crash unfolded.

He heard a crash to his left, and a vehicle had plowed into another car,” Jimenez said. “Luckily, that first car took most of the impact before hitting the side of my husband’s car. My son was on the driver’s side, and I’m just grateful it wasn’t worse.”

Jimenez says the driver then sped through the intersection, hitting two more cars before coming to a stop. The driver ran from the scene before they were caught by police.

It’s another devastating blow for the Jimenez family. Molly is battling metastatic breast cancer that has spread to her brain, liver, spinal fluid, and bones.

That’s kind of what makes our situation harder, obviously,” she said through tears. “I’ve been battling metastatic breast cancer for the last two and a half years and potentially facing the end of my life.”

She recently began whole-brain radiation while continuing treatment in hopes of buying more time with her family.

Despite everything, Molly says she’s thankful her loved ones made it home that morning, and is choosing to see the kindness of strangers as a source of hope.

“Maybe it’s just a blessing in disguise,” she said. “Because we can use the support no matter what.”

A GoFundMe page* has been set up to help the family replace their vehicle and cover ongoing medical expenses.
