OGDEN, Utah — Downtown Ogden’s Historic 25th Street is one of 20 finalists for “Best Main Street” in USA TODAY’s Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2024.
USA TODAY assembled a panel of experts that chose areas around the country that filled with living history and vibrant culture, and are the heart of their communities. Ogden’s 25th Street fits the bill and is currently in the number 1 spot.
“It’s really a testament to the work. And it’s the sentiment that everybody feels when they’re visiting downtown and just living here,” said Mike McBride, Ogden City communications manager.
25th Street’s accessibility to recreation and world-class skiing may give Ogden an edge in the contest. That, and its breathtaking mountain views.
“I think in its own right, Ogden is leveling up and there’s more to come. There are big plans for the downtown and it’ll only get better,” said McBride.
Downtown Ogden currently has some major projects underway including:
- A major overhaul of Union Station and the area around it.
- The Wonderblock. A complete re-vamp of the land used for the old Wonderbread factory.
Ogden City believes both projects will further entice people to visit the area. But this is a far cry from what Ogden’s downtown was like just a few decades ago.
“90% of the storefronts on 25th Street were boarded up and unoccupied,” said McBride.
It’s taken many years for Ogden’s Historic 25th Street to improve its reputation and move on from its checkered past. This nomination is proof that the city’s revival efforts have paid off.
The voting for the 20 nominees lasts until April 8.
