AMERICAN FORK — A man went missing and died after helping a 12-year-old girl at Silver Lake Flat Reservoir in American Fork Canyon Saturday afternoon. Search and rescue crews recovered his body at approximately 10:15 p.m., according to officials on the scene.
Sgt. Ray Ormond with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said that emergency crews received a call at 7:00 p.m. that a 31-year-old man had gone under the water and hadn’t been seen since.
In an update on Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the 31-year-old as Daniel Braga Figueiredo. The sheriff’s office said Figueiredo had gone out on his paddleboard to help a 12-year-old family member after she drifted away on an inflatable tube.
Authorities said Figueiredo and the 12-year-old both ended up in the water.
“Daniel was last seen lifting the 12 year old up onto an inflatable device and then disappeared under the water,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
Witnesses tried to help and 911 was called.
Several agencies, first responders and a helicopter assisted with the search for Figueiredo.
Figueiredo’s body was found around 9:30 p.m.
The sheriff’s office expressed its condolences to the family.
