SALT LAKE CITY — Park City Mountain Resort is installing a new parking garage at its Canyons Village base. Construction begins on Monday.

The resort said the new structure, accompanied by a fresh welcome center, will improve the arrival experience at the base.

Once installed, the new parking structure will replace Canyons Village surface parking, consolidating it into one area right off state Route 224. It will be built at the southeast corner of Lower Village Road, Frostwood Drive and Canyons Resort Drive roundabout.

The resort expects the project to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Additionally, the parking structure will be near public transit options, allowing visitors to ride Park City buses to and from the resort and between the ski resort’s two bases.

“Skiers and riders can expect an entirely new and improved experience when getting to the slopes,” read the press release.

According to Park City Mountain, previous efforts to overhaul transportation at Park City Mountain Village, the resort’s other base area, have been successful. They anticipate the new parking structure will improve guest experience and safety.

The design intends to reduce traffic in the heart of Canyons Village and make it easier for guests to get on snow with convenient access to the Cabriolet,” read the press release.

In addition to improving guest experiences, the resort said the new parking structure was designed with sustainability in mind. Electric vehicle charging stations will be offered and the structure’s facade will be decorated with “beetle-kill lodgepole pine.”

Vail Resorts, the owner of the resort, often boasts about its efforts to move toward sustainability. The company has implemented renewable energy and zero waste efforts on its resorts.

Park City Mountain Resort visitors will travel between the parking structure’s levels on “enclosed glass escalators,” enabling them to travel between levels of the new structure.

When accessing the slopes, visitors will still use Cabriolet, a lift that carries skiers from one of the current surface lots to the base area above. Currently, that lot serves as a free parking option for guests and is often crowded.

Park City Mountain parking adjustments during construction

According to Park City Mountain’s website, some alterations will arrive at Canyons Village once construction begins.

Although the number of surface parking stalls in the Cabriolet lot will be decreased, all lots will be free for the rest of the season. Garages and spaces along W. High Mountain Road will continue to be paid.

Per the resort website, parking attendants will be available in the mornings to help drivers find overflow parking after stalls in Cabriolet lot have been filled. These areas will be connected to the base with pedestrian paths and shuttles.

During construction, PCMR is encouraging skiers to use Park City public transportation. It provides several park and ride options where skiers can park their vehicles and board free buses, which stop at both of the resort’s bases.

Canyons Village also getting new gondola

The new parking structure won’t be the only change to Canyons Village. After the current ski season ends, Park City Mountain Resort teams will begin installing a new gondola.

Sunrise Gondola is slated to be installed adjacent to the existing Red Pine Gondola, which carries skiers from the Canyons Village base area to an area where they can access chairlifts.

The new gondola will replace Sunrise lift, according to PCMR’s website.

Additionally, the new gondola is in an area where it won’t be as likely to face wind impacts, which are common in the area.

Similar to the new parking structure, Park City Mountain expects Sunrise Gondola to improve the skier experience.
