Police beef up patrols after East Sandy school threat

SANDY, Utah — Extra police are on hand today at East Sandy Elementary School after a threat was e-mailed to a school employee.
“Extra police will be here and counselors will be here if parents feel like their children want to talk to someone,” Canyons School District spokesman Jeff Haney said, explaining it was up to parents to decide whether to send children to school. “We will have school because we think it’s going to be a safe place.”
A shelter-in-place protocol was also in effect for the day as a precaution.
Attendance was dramatically reduced Monday; about 103 students reported for class at East Sandy, compared to the normal attendance of about 440.
Haney said this type of disruption is becoming much more common. According to Haney, when the district first split off from the Jordan School District 10 years ago, this type of threat was an extremely rare occurrence.
Police continue to investigate. They have not disclosed what was in the e-mail, but say every threat is taken seriously.
