SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that Elder Jeffrey R. Holland was set apart as Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the second-highest governing body of the church.

According to a news release from church officials, President Holland was appointed to the position by President Russell M. Nelson on November 15. He takes the position formerly held by the late President M. Russell Ballard, who served as acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until his death on Nov. 12, 2023, at the age of 95.

The position of acting president is a calling assigned by seniority, according to church officials. In other words, the senior member (by date of assignment) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles typically becomes the quorum president. Because President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, has more seniority in terms of service on the quorum, President Holland will be referred to as “acting president,” as President Ballard was.
