Propane leak caused fatal house explosion in Cache County

CACHE JUNCTION, Utah — A house explosion and that killed one person and critically injured 2 others last week was caused by a propane leak.
“Through the identification, we identified that propane appears to have leaked through the fuel system into the basement of the structure,” Cache County Fire Chief Rod Hammer told KSL NewsRadio on Monday afternoon.
“And then once that propane pooled and reached a competent ignition source in caused the explosion.”
The Cache County Sheriff’s Office identified John, Caryn, and Joshua Mullins as the family involved in the explosion. John Mullins died in the explosion. The health status of the other two occupants is unknown.
The home is located in the Cache Junction farming community in Cache County.
Chief Hammer had this warning as the snow begins to melt.
“We’ve seen cases, especially with snow melt and ice melt off of roofs where the ice falls on a gas regulator or meter and can crack or fraction those.”
Dominion Energy has several recommendations for homeowners as the ice starts to melt, including making sure that water isn’t dripping and freezing on the meter.
