Provo bridge to be torn down and rebuilt

PROVO — A major bridge on University Avenue in Provo is going to be torn down and rebuilt, suspecting to cause some significant traffic delays.
University Avenue carries a lot of traffic north and south through Provo and the bridge over the Union pacific track, and now front runner tracks, was built back in 1966. UDOT says it’s old it needs safety upgrades so the bridge is going to be rebuilt.
Construction has already started but the delays will pick up later this month when they demolish half the bridge and again when the same thing will happen to the second half.

Two lanes will remain open throughout the construction project, one for each direction of traffic but UDOT advises looking for other ways around town to avoid delays.
The new bridge will take two years to finish and cost 70 million dollars. The new bridge will include larger sidewalks, bike lanes and other safety improvements.
Set to finish in fall 2027 the bridge should have a new life span of 75 years.
