PROVO, Utah — The Provo Police Department announced Monday morning that Police Chief Fred Ross had resigned. Provo Mayor Kaufai named Captain Troy Beebe as acting chief following Ross’s resignation.

In a press release, Provo Police said Ross had turned in his resignation on Sunday, effective immediately, to Kaufusi.

“It has become evident that my fit within the Provo Police Department as the Chief has been determined to not be sustainable,” Ross said in his resignation statement.

Ross said he discussed the choice with his family and decided it would be in his best interest to resign.

Ross added that had been an honor to serve the department and the Provo community. He had been police chief since November 2021.

Kaufusi appointed Beebe as acting chief Monday morning.

“In accepting Chief Ross’ resignation, it became important to unify the department quickly,” said Kaufusi in a press release about the change.

Provo Police said Beebe has served in law enforcement for 29 years and has “deep roots” in the Provo community.
