Regional robotics competition coming to Maverik Center this weekend

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The Maverik Center will be the site of the Utah Regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition set for March 3-4.

A total of 44 high school teams from Utah and nine other states will converge in West Valley City. At the competition, robots designed and built by students perform specific tasks.

The event is co-organized by University of Utah’s John and Marcia Price College of Engineering. The event is free and open to the public.

Game chosen for regional robotics competition

According to a press release, this year’s game called Charged Up. It highlights the significance of renewable energy in the world today. In the game, robots controlled both autonomously and by students must move game pieces onto docking stations on the playing field.

“We’re excited to see what the teams come up with to meet this season’s challenges,” said Utah Regional FIRST Robotics Director Chelsey Short in a news release. “Our competitions are cool because teams compete in cooperative alliances of three robots against three. So, they can be on the same alliance with a team for one round. And competing against them the next round.”

Winners from the Utah regional competition will move on to the FIRST national championship. That is set for April 19-22 in Houston.
