Davis County robotics team raises money, will attend world championship

FARMINGTON, Utah — The sixth graders on the Valley View Elementary robotics team will attend the Vex World Robotics Championships after all.
Previously, the Davis School District had decided not to allow the sixth-graders to travel to the championship, based on a recent policy change covering student travel.

The change was made to the policy the day before parents needed to register their children from the robotics championship.
“Which is pretty shady,” Michael Douglas, a parent of one of the students, told KSL NewsRadio this week.
The change in policy and the district’s decision not to allow the trip prompted parents and others to start fundraising. And by Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised enough money to fund the trip.
One of the parents told KSL NewsRadio that the kids worked hard to get to this competition. He called the kids Utah’s future engineers and computer programmers.
Another concern of the parents was that the school board changed the policy after the students had already qualified for the competition.
The school district said that the change reflected a rule they already had in place.
The students will represent their school in Dallas May 10 through May 12, 2022.
