A busy Fourth of July at Salt Lake City International Airport expected, but not a record setter

Jul 3, 2025, 3:00 PM

SALT LAKE CITY — AAA expects record numbers of people to be traveling for the Fourth of July, but that’s not expected to be the case at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

Spokesperson Nancy Volmer said they’re expecting about 30,000 people to fly out from Salt Lake City.

“Typically, around the holiday period, such as the Fourth of July, we do see an uptick in travelers. But it’s typically not a record breaker for the Fourth of July.”

Plan ahead for Fourth of July weekend

Volmer said most of those 30,000 people are not going to be frequent fliers.

“Typically, the airport is fairly busy with a combination of business travelers and leisure travelers. And when we see the holiday periods, we see more of the leisure travelers coming through the airport. And so those are the travelers who are probably not as familiar with the airport as maybe some of the business travelers are. So that’s when we … like to remind people to make sure that you’re at the airport a couple of hours before your flight is scheduled to depart.”

Volmer said even though the airport has 14,250 parking spots, on busy weekends those will fill up, so plan some extra time or “look at booking, parking online just to ensure that you have less anxiety when you’re coming to the airport to make sure you can get to your bags checked through the security screening lanes and then onto your gate.”

Another potential slowdown is that people are now required to have a REAL ID.

“Make sure that you do have the proper identification when you’re traveling through because if you do not, there will be some extra time to make sure that you get through the screening process.” “If you don’t have the REAL ID on your driver’s license…you [can] have [your] passport as well.”

Volmer also reminded drivers picking up passengers to stay in the park and wait lot until the people you’re picking up have gotten their luggage and are at the pickup location to help cut down on congestion at the curb.

New sights to see for Salt Lake City International Airport travelers

Volmer said they’ve added some interesting attractions.

“For example, in Concourse B that we opened last fall, we have Alley the Allosaurus … that is a donation from the … Utah Museum of Natural History.  That’s a fun thing for kids to see. And then for those who have different sensory needs, we have opened up a sensory room on Concourse A. And plus, we have some new concessions and shops that people will enjoy in Concourse B and to the east.”
