SALT LAKE CITY — A delivery truck driver was killed after being hit by a box truck at the Salt Lake City International Airport Wednesday morning, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

At approximately 5:48 a.m., police said they were notified of an “industrial crash” in the Delta Cargo parking lot within the airport grounds.

While it’s unclear what contributed to the deadly accident, the SLCPD and Delta said a delivery driver for one company was walking around his truck when a second driver for another company backed up and hit the man. He was knocked to the ground and hit his head.

Police told KSL TV that officers with the SLCPD Airport Division responded to the scene and attempted life-saving efforts, but the man died at the scene.

“It’s an industrial accident, and it’s unfortunate that it resulted in somebody’s death,” said Detective Michael Ruff with SLCPD.

“We are saddened by this tragic accident and will cooperate with any investigations,” said Samantha Moore Facteau, a spokesperson with Delta Air Lines. “Out of respect for the individual, his family and the investigation process, we’ll decline any further comment at this time.”

At the time of publication, police had not released information about the two drivers involved or the companies they work for. Police said they are investigating like they would a deadly car crash by digitally remapping the scene.

They said it’s an important reminder to be safe wherever you work or drive.

“Accidents can happen anywhere, and safety is obviously important,” Ruff said. “And that’s something that all of us have to take into account.”

Delta said its Salt Lake cargo operations were closed due to the accident, and would let cargo customers know what that means for shipping. Delta confirmed there was no impact on passengers flying Delta Wednesday.

No other immediate information was available, but police were working to provide updates.

Editor’s note: This story initially reported the man had been driving a semitruck and has since been corrected.
