Sen. Mike Lee visits US-Mexico border with other GOP senators

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Sen. Mike Lee said he traveled to the US-Mexico border to see how the surge of young immigrants is handled.

Lee and 18 other GOP senators are looking at the facilities where unaccompanied minors are housed. But he told Fox News there were no news reporters or photographers.

“We’re not journalists, we’re not good at any of that, but if we’re the only American who could be allowed in there.”

“We should be able to send back unaccompanied minors,” Lee said.

Lee said he’s pushing what he calls the “Stopping Border Surges Act,” which would change the way the US immigration system handles unaccompanied minors arriving at the border.

In Texas, Lee told Fox News he’s backing a number of changes in the law to help manage the surge.

President Joe Biden says it’s not uncommon to see an influx of immigration this time of year. He has asked Vice President Kamala Harris to work on the surge at the border.
