Former shelter dog from Brigham City joins Riverton Police K9 unit

SALT LAKE CITY — It’s a brand new chapter of life for this former shelter dog.
While taking care of the dog at Brigham City Animal Shelter, the staff came to believe it had the potential to be a police dog, Brigham City officials said in a Facebook post.
This led Brigham City Police Chief Chad Reyes and his K9 unit to do some preliminary testing, and it was true. The dog did have potential.
However, its department didn’t need another K9 at the time, so the city connected with some other departments to see if anyone else was interested.
That’s when the Riverton Police Department stepped in and took up the offer.
What’s next for Riverton’s new K9?
After sorting through 554 name suggestions, the department narrowed down the list to seven finalists:
- Zeus
- Tango
- Ryker
- Rio
- Koda
- Creed
- Atlas
Out of 5,464 total votes, 1,047 chose Atlas as the top choice.
