Police searching for suspect after shots fired in West Valley City

SALT LAKE CITY — Police are searching for a suspect who fired several shots outside a gas station in West Valley City early Saturday morning.

Lt. Steve Beardshall with the West Valley City Police Department said a person, likely a male, was seen on surveillance footage firing a gun towards a group of people outside Charlie’s Market at approximately 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

Beardshall said the group appeared to be in a “large physical altercation” when the suspect fired the gun towards them. Surveillance footage showed the suspect firing low to the ground, rather than specifically at anyone in the crowd.

Three people were lightly injured after the gunshots. Beardshall said the injuries likely came from shrapnel from the bullets hitting the ground, rather than being hit by gunfire.

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
