SALT LAKE CITY. UT — The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control wants a name change.

The department’s Executive Director, Tiffany Clayson says she told lawmakers she wants to drop the word “Control” and be called The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services.

Behind the Department Alcoholic Beverage Control name change

“What we think is taking out that word ‘control’ and inserting that word ‘services’ better reflects the variety of services (we provide),” she told KSL Newsradio.  Those services, Clayson says, include “prevention education services, licensing and compliance, as well as retail services.”

She adds it has nothing to do with the state having less “control” over alcohol sales and regulation.

“The suggestion to change the name has nothing to do with pulling back how the system is set up, Clayson said.  “It’s really to just better reflect and focus on how our department can be better customer service driven across all our platforms.”

Lawmakers have final say

It’s the state legislature who has the authority to change the name of the DABC. Clayson said last week she presented to them in the Business and Labor Committee, in response to the Governor Spencer Cox’s transition report.

“I basically suggested and let the legislators know that we would support –we would be agreeable to a name change should they be inclined to agree.”

Benefits of a controlled state

Clayson said, “I believe in the benefits of a control state system,”

Clayson says the state has one of the lowest underage drinking rates in the country. She also points out Utah also has a low DUI rate.

“The suggestion to change the name has nothing to do with pulling back how the system is set up,” she said. “It’s really just a better reflect and focus on how our department can be better customer service-driven across all our plat forms.”
