The Utah Debate Commission will not hold GOP special election primary debate

SALT LAKE CITY — If you’re relying on debates to get to know the candidates for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District race, there’s one less option now. The Utah Debate Commission said they’re not holding a primary debate for the three Republicans who have a primary on Sept. 5, but they are organizing one for the general election. 

UDC Board co-chair Wayne Niederhauser said they couldn’t do it because of time. It also costs a lot to put on a debate. 

“Resources are always a factor like any non-profit organization,” said Niederhauser. “We not only have to plan for the special election but also for an election year in 2024.”

The Commission held a primary debate in Sen. Mike Lee’s senate race last year, but there was a lot of contention when Utah’s GOP asked candidates to hold off participating because they wanted more say.

It’s still possible for the Republican Party to hold its own debates. Candidate Celeste Maloy has said she’s doing her own, planning to host 13 debates in 13 days.
