Fire crews respond to South Mountain Fire in Tooele County

SALT LAKE CITY — Crews responded to a large fire in Tooele County Monday that rapidly grew overnight due to high winds in the area.
According to John Smith with the North Tooele Fire Department, the South Mountain Fire started around 8:44 p.m. and was located just above South Mountain Road, south of Stansbury Park and west of Tooele.
Smith said the fire was 0% contained and estimated to be at around 200 acres. By Tuesday at 8 a.m., the fire was estimated to have grown between 1,000 to 2,000 acres after high winds caused it to spread overnight. The fire remained at 0% containment.
The North Tooele Fire District said it is expecting additional resources and air support; however, a cold front moving through the area may complicate matters.
“As a cold front moves through the area, we’re expecting this to be a challenge,” the fire district said. “Please avoid the area, and do not attempt to fly a drone near the fireground.”
As of Tuesday morning, there was no threat to the public and no evacuations were ordered.
