Police arrest man after he allegedly ran from officers at the U of U

SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man early Sunday after he allegedly ran from police during an investigation on Saturday at the University of Utah.
Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release that reports were made about Jeffrey Chadwick Jackson, 39, allegedly making threatening comments about a weapon, prompting police to respond at 300 South and University Street at 4 p.m.
Originally, police said the reports claimed Jackson had “multiple firearms” on him.
“Witnesses told officers the suspect claimed to have multiple firearms and was in someone’s backyard without permission,” police said. “No firearm was visibly seen by community members.”
Brent Weiserg with the Salt Lake City Police Department said when officers arrived to the scene, they found Jackson with a dog and asked him to stop so they could investigate the situation. Police said Jackson refused to stop and he started to run from them, prompting officers to run after him.
“As (the police) were chasing, the suspects dog turned around and started charging one of our officers,” Weiserg said. “The officer pulled out his firearm and discharged a single round at the dog as the dog was charging the officer.”
The SCPD also said in it’s news release that the dog attempted to bite the officer who fired at it.
Weiserg said the officers believed the dog was struck, but were unsure because the suspect and the dog had run off. They continued their search, finding the dog later on.
“The dog was found with a non-life-threatening injury to its paw,” Weiserg said. “After being checked out, the dog was turned over to Salt Lake County Animal Control.”
The University of Utah proceeded to send out an alert about Jackson with an explanation of what he looked like. The SLCPD said Jackson was later found around midnight early Sunday after reports were made about Jackson near 600 E. 400 South.
The SLCPD said Jackson was safely arrested by police with “charges of felony theft, which are associated with the stolen bike case being investigated by the University of Utah Department of Public Safety.”
The news release also said the SLCPD is also screening Jackson again for fleeing and trespassing.
