Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation launches free online boating safety course

SALT LAKE CITY — With the warm weather kicking in, Utahns can finally go outside and enjoy fun recreational activities, including boating.

In an effort to promote safety before people start heading out to the water, the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation and the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water teamed up to put together a free online boating safety course.

 

Why take the course?

Utah requires all youth between the ages of 12 and 17 to complete a certification course before operating a Personal Watercraft. The DOR’s course meets that requirement since it was approved by their Boating Program and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

Being nationally approved allows Utahns who complete the course to go boating in other states as well.

The boating safety course is open to anyone interested in receiving instruction, providing valuable guidance to help prevent accidents.

“The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation is committed to providing boaters with the resources they need to recreate responsibly and safely,” said DOR Boating Program Manager Ty Hunter in a press release. “This free online course is an excellent opportunity for Utahns to gain critical boating safety knowledge from the comfort of their own home, helping to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on Utah’s waters.”

According to the press release, those who complete a boating safety course may also receive an insurance discount depending on the provider.

What’s in the course?

The course is made up of six lessons. It typically takes about four to eight hours to complete, but participants can work at their own pace.

After completing the course, they will be able to print their certificate.
