SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns have a rare opportunity to leave a mark on the state’s Capitol grounds. Officials are asking for ideas for a new monument that could stand for generations at the Utah Capitol.
For the first time in years, a large new monument is being added to the Capitol grounds. It’s the only one of its kind that’ll be accepted for the next century.
“This commemoration will only be added once every 100 years. The intent is that so the Capitol grounds don’t become too full too quickly,” said Stephanie Angelides, the curator for the Utah Capitol.
The idea is to make space, literally, for future generations to tell their own stories.
“We want to give the opportunity for future generations to add to the grounds and reflect on what’s important to them in the future at that time.”
Angelides says the invitation is wide open.
“If it’s important to them, I feel like it’s definitely worthy of trying and submitting it and seeing if it can work out,” Angelides said.
Submissions can honor anything from a person to a symbol, so long as it tells a unique Utah story.
Proposals are due Sept. 30.
The Capitol Preservation Board will make the final call.
